I rarely do this but something prompted me to jump right to the Viola Lee track in the 4/12/70 show, I said to myself wow that's good, then did a search and sure enough its been covered before by LIA (full thread: http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=203221)

From a great show, 4/12, we have an excellent, light-footed Viola Lee; and from the legendary 5/2 we have a ragged but definitive version. The song was well-suited for 1970: in that year the Dead played an aggressive style in which the three guitar lines danced around each other in multiple rhythms, and r&b-styled tunes like Good Loving, Dancing in the Streets, Not Fade Away, Easy Wind, Man's World, and Hard to Handle became centerpieces for the band's new hard-edged jamming. Viola Lee was slowed down to a sultry groove, the better to gradually kick up the pace until lightning strikes the guitars and an unearthly squall erases time and space. Pigpen still played keyboards throughout the jam (especially notable on 4/12), though he was not as dominant in the sound.

I have always enjoyed that show Jim. I listen to it regularly. Not sure why it has garnered so many 3 star reviews. It's way better than that! One of the better shows where no Dark Star or Other One was performed. As you pointed out, there are more exciting versions of Violas, but any Violas is a goood Violas in my opinion, especially in 1970. Plenty of highlights, we recently debated the fact that here was no acoustic set at this performance, athough it has been erroneously documented that there was. A very fine performance!

it's got 3 stars because it's not that good. Maybe the Viola Lee is the high light?
-poor recording quality
-lack luster performance.

I'm starting to dislike the covers. In this case they feel uninspired and the originals are so much better...
I you though Pigs was great (and he does have him moments) listen to somebody like Jimmy Reed and you will hear that is is barley worthy of 3 stars..

Also, is Pig a peder-ass or what? Just listen to school girl and you have to wonder!

Obviously you didnt bother listening to the entire show. Just what you call the "pedder-ass" part, right?

For staters to sound quality of the soundboard source is excellent.

And the highight of the show is certainly not the subdued Viola Lee Blues but the extraordinary peformance of (edit: that would be Dancin') which is regarded as one of the top two of all time. It's been immortalized on Fallout From the Phil Zone.

Perhaps not among the finest shows of 1970, its certainly a fine show well worthy or 4-5 stars. And plenty of well respected reviewers agree with that.

Perhaps this proceedure might help you...

Hi Cliff.

here is the stream I listed to.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-04-12.sbd.kaplan.3820.sbeok.shnf

I listed to the whole thing. I'm not impressed. The sound is not so good. They mailed it in. Pig is a bit of a peder-ass. Maybe... you know it's just a cover song that all. Not a very good version, and given how thin skinned you guys are, you should be outraged by them lyrics!!!

Guess what there where bad shows in th 70's! OMG!!!

Jeez Cliff you are such a softy underneath that hard shell!

I don't care what some burned out reviewers tell me, that show, it's a 3. I have my OWN opinion, go tell somebody else what to think!

Stick to Zappa. You seem to have a better grasp of his material!

Is that the best you got? Sure I know some Zappa.. I know lot's of other rock and roll and blues. A man needs perspective right?

According to you own scale a 3 ain't that bad!

Fact is some the early dead covers where not that good and it remains a fact that Pig's comes off like a pervert singing little school girl, there hardly any satire when he sings! This show is so so...

I read your posts and can't help but wonder, are you related to Cliff Clavin?
